Sticky Slow Cooker Chicken
I’m a sucker for a slow cooker recipe. As a working mom with a full-time job, I take whatever help I can get when it comes to dinner. And, my slow cooker is my favorite helper! I originally found this recipe on Lynn’s Kitchen Adventures. When Lynn posted this recipe for Sticky Slow Cooker Chicken, I printed it out right away. It was only a matter of time before I gave I tested it out for myself!
Originally, this recipe came from Cook’s Illustrated. That is one of my all time favorite cooking magazines! I love Lynn’s blog. She always has great recipes and healthy living posts. If you get a chance, stop over and check it out! Tell her that It’s a Keeper sent you!
Is It a Keeper?
Definitely a keeper! This was really good! It was packed with flavor. And so easy to make — a perfect recipe in my book! As Lynn says on her blog, you may be tempted to skip the broiling part of the recipe, but DON’T! This final step makes the recipe. And, any recipe that calls for fresh ginger is A-OK in my book! I absolutely adore fresh ginger! But if you don’t have it, it’s OK. You can use ground ginger — about a teaspoon should do ya.
Now, go get your sticky on!
In case you were wondering, this is the slow cooker I have. I absolutely LOVE it!

2 tablespoons of minced ginger
4 cloves of garlic, minced

1/4 cup water
1/4 cup tomato paste
Combine 1/4 cup sugar, 2 tablespoon soy sauce , ginger, garlic, and cayenne pepper. Add chicken and toss to coat. Place in a slow cooker and cook on low for about 4 hours or until done. When done place chicken in a broiler proof dish. Combine remaining 1/2 cup sugar, water, and tomato paste, and remaining soy sauce. Brush on chicken and cook under the broiler for about 5 minutes or until chicken is slightly crisp. Keep a close watch on the chicken under the broiler.

Sounds yummy! I love crockpot dishes lately!
That looks so good Chris. I’m wondering if you could use boneless chicken breast instead of bone-in chicken? By the way, I love your blog….<3
Yep! That’s what I used…boneless, skinless! It was fantastic!
Thanks for the kind words!
I just happen to have boneless skinless chicken breasts in the freezer…:-) I will definitely try this Chris!!! Thanks for your response.
I make this regularly, it’s a family favorite meal! Kelly @ Semi Homemade Mom

I can’t wait to try making this! I’m thinking Valentine’s Day will be that day. I just have a question, what can you do if your stove is a bit older and doesn’t have a broiler?
Hope you like it!
I would try cooking the sauce down a bit in a pan on the stove if you don’t have a broiler. Let me know how you make out!
What a fast way to cook a cichken! We’re not much for beer at our house, but I’m wondering if cichken broth or water work work, too. I can’t wait to give it a try.
I would definitely try subbing chicken broth for the beer. Or, maybe a non-alcoholic beer? Let me know how you make out!
I know I cant use my Pyrex dish under the broiler or it will crack, but I was wondering if I could use my metal 9×13? Im making this tonight and I dont want to have to run to the store for a new pan.
I’ve used my metal pan under the broiler without problems. I would think you would be OK too! I hope you enjoy the dish!
Is it possible to cook the chicken on low for 8 – 10 hours since I don’t have 4 hours in a row to cook this before I’m home for dinner at night or would that way overcook this? Perhaps I could pre-cook the first step and just broil it when I get home to heat it up? Has anyone tried either of those approaches yet? Thanks!!
Hi Heather! I always cook my chicken for about 8 hours. I put in before leaving for work and then finish it off when I get home. I works just fine. I do use the thickest chicken breasts I can find though. I’m fearful that the thin ones would be waaaaaay overdone.
Good luck!
Christina
