Spice Rack Dilemma
One of the things about my new kitchen that has me perplexed is my spice cabinet/drawer. In my old kitchen, I kept all of my spices on lazy Susans in a small cabinet next to my stove. This system worked perfectly for me. Savory spices and herbs were on the first shelf and baking spices and extracts were on the second self.
Now, I have 2 very slender cabinets on either side of my cooktop and I can’t seem to find a good way to store my spices and oils.
I have some in the cabinets, but I found that I couldn’t find anything. And, if I needed a spice that was in the back, I basically had to empty the shelf in order to reach it.
That just won’t do. I ended up moving most of them to the drawer just below my cook top. It’s working for me, but I’m not loving it. Maybe I just need more organization?
In my search for spice organization, I found so many options. There are wall spice racks, door spice racks and drawer spice racks (sorry for sounding like Dr. Seuss!). Right now, I’m leaning toward the drawer organizers.
Now, on to organizing the oils! What kind of kitchen spice rack do you have?

Can you use these? http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=spice+rack+drawer&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=16300037933409825293&sa=X&ei=EaUgT-OEIeTi2AWW2aC6CQ&ved=0CHoQ8gIwAQ
I had these before I re-did my kitchen and really liked them. Now I have the tiered stands : http://www.flickr.com/photos/mennenga/6763134953/in/photostream
I love how you’re storing your spices now! Awesome! And, are those lights INSIDE of your cabinets?!?!?! Brilliant! Are they hardwired? Thanks for providing the link….the price is pretty reasonable!
they are stick on lights – battery operated – from walmart
LOVE IT!!!! I’m so going to get some!
Here are more pictures of my stove area – my narrow cabinets are probably a bit wider than yours, but they are perfect for the cook books, basket of spice packets, easy breakfast and snack nuts and fruit, cooking essentials, etc….

Thanks for sharing, Kristi! Those are some good suggestions! I could probably store my recipe boxes in these cabinets and put the oils, etc. in a basket or box that I can pull out. Thanks for the inspiration!
Your cabinets are gorgeous!
Mine are in a drawer just like that.. it works because I can see everything!
Do you use an organizer or do you just line them up (like I did)? I’m trying to decide if the organizers are worth the cost.
what about using baskets to hold the spices on the shelves – easy to pull in and out…
That’s a good idea! I could label the caps so I would know what everything was. Hmmmm…..
I just read the other day where a gal bought a hanger for shoes, etc… at Wal-Mart for about $6 and hooked it over a door and filled it with her spices! How very clever, huh!!
Great idea!!! Thanks for sharing!
I saw these spice organizer thingies on TV once. They resemble those tupperwares you put cereal in. But they are shelves and they pull out so you can see everything. Tall and slender….might be perfect for you! http://www.amazon.com/Swivel-Store-Organizer-Storage-System/dp/B005BY6HRU
Mine are in my lazy Susan I have them on the top shelf in separate plastic bins by type of spice. I did write on the lid tops with a sharpie just to make them easier to pick out in a hurry.
